The 26-mile Crow Pass Trail is one of Alaska's most popular trails. There's not much competition for this title, but it's deserving of the traffic...

Raven Glacier, located just north of Crow Pass

Looking north down the Raven Creek valley towards the Eagle River and Mount Yukla

I wish that the Eagle River had been as easy to ford for me as it was for this moose. The ford was challenging only in the combination of its length (about 100 feet across) and temperature (32.0001 degrees).

Evening light in the Eagle River Valley

A moraine-filled valley below Bombardment and Rumble Passes

The vertical relief in the Chugach is mind-blowing -- mountains seem to rise 6,000+ sheer vertical feet effortlessly. Of course, this range was scoured by huge glaciers, the remnants of some of which are still around today (some still quite huge).

Peters Creek Valley sits at about 2,500 feet whereas the jagged peak in the left of the image tops out at around 7,500 feet.

Phenomenal ridge-walking on Thunderbird Peak, elevation 6,575 feet.

More great ridge-walking on the way to Pioneer Peak from Lake Ekutna

The ridge was NOT flat though -- I grabbed this photo when I stopped briefly to catch my breath and saw just how steep the terrain was.

The final ridgewalk to Pioneer Peak (elev. 6,398 feet). You can see the heavy smoke in the air that had been blown in from forest fires hundreds of miles away, outside of Fairbanks.
