This trip was going to be a bit different than all the others I had done -- I was going to be doing it with someone. And not just someone, but Krissy Moehl (pronounced "mail"), who is a native of Seattle, one of the most elite ultra-runners in the country, and a former employee of Montrail.


In 1996 the Buffalo Creek Fire scorched a 10-mile section of the Colorado Trail


Within the first hour Krissy and I realized that neither of us had the fuel for our stove (the fuel bottle was accidentally sent to Breckenridge in a maildrop). In leiu of fuel we built a cook fire, which required far more blowing than either of us wanted to do during our first night at elevation.

I thought I was pretty un-lazy -- until I started hanging out Krissy. During our daily afternoon 1-hour breaks, during which I would almost always get in a good nap, Krissy would use the time to get in some pushups and sit-ups. Crazy…


That valley is filled with tailing piles from mining activity further upstream.


We had some great trail angels on this trip, the first of which was Jim Anderson, who Krissy knew through her ultra-running.
