The High Sierra

With 4.5 days of food to get me 150 miles to Echo Lake.

A few of Yosemite's iconic domes near Tuolumne Meadows.

Fabulous evening sunlight on the Tuolumne River.

Fresh black bear tracks.

Thankfully I know how to read a map and use a compass, because these trails signs were useless.

Looking south back over Sonora Pass. The PCT descends the large bowl in the middle of the photo (and slightly up and right), which is steep and scary early in the season, especially at night in the dark, which is when I have hit it two years in a row.

Forget-me-not wildflowers

As the temperatures consistently rose and the sun started to melt, "sun cups" began forming in the snow. Sun cups can be a few inches to a few feet deep, and they are completely inconsistent, which makes it impossible to establish a rhythm while walking over them.

Boulder Lakes, one of the few glacial lakes in this area; most glaciers easily plowed through the erosion-prone volcanic rock, as opposed to the erosion-resistant granite found further south.
