NE Washington, Idaho, NW Montana

The Okanogan River Valley as the Pacific Northwest Trail begins to climb up Whistler Canyon into the Okanogan Highlands.

Cattle and an old barn in the Highlands.

A fairly typical stretch of trail on the PNT, which sees little foot traffic and even less trail maintenance.
The PNT: NOT an easy trail.

This was one of the most encouraging run-ins I had on the entire trip. I met this trio at the south end of the Kettle Range; the older gentleman was intimately familiar with the area (he's been backpacking out there for 50 years, and I don't doubt him a bit!) and he volunteered to take his neighbor and sun out for a weekend.

An extensive burn in the Kettle Range.

After crossing the Columbia River outside of Northport, WA, which has the easternmost bridge over the Columbia.

Eating healthily: chocolate milk, and four fresh doughnuts.

The beginning of the thimbleberry season.

The old Lind Ranch house atop the pass between Black Canyon and O'Hare Creek Valley.

A slightly smoky view from near the top of 7,040-foot Abercrombie Mountain.
