Montana's Rockies - Part I

The Ahern Drift drainage, which again can pose a real snow hazard early season, though further off the screen to the right.

Looking east from Swiftcurrent Pass over the alpine lakes Bullhead, Redrock, and Fishercap.

Early-morning along Lake Josephine on my way towards Piegan Pass.

Looking north from near Piegan Pass down Cataract Creek.

Terminal glacial moraines below Piegan Pass, I think. Each level represents one year in the now-non-existent glacier's retreat up the slope.

Piegan Glacier, top center, and Jackson Glacier, far middle left, which is one of the largest two glaciers remaining in the park, the other being its nearby neighbor Blackfoot.

Thimbleberries were in prime season while I was in Glacier and the Bob Marshall Wilderness. This makes it critical to be making noise while walking, because both grizzly bear and black bears are often ravaging these patches for food.

Pitamaken Pass (to the left of the knoll) from Pitamaken Lake.

As I went further south along the Divide through Glacier, smoke from fires in the Bob Marshall Wilderness started to obscure views.

Early-morning hiking near Dawson Pass, a highly recommended alternate instead of dropping straight down into the Dry Fork of Two Medicine Creek.
