The Great Divide Basin of Wyoming

For about a dozen miles the CDT follows what is believed to be the true Oregon Trail.

Hawkeye, a happy 54 year-old CDT hiker who has done all of the other major trails too.

It's so hot and dry in the Basin that rainfall sometimes evaporates before it hits the ground.

A very radical departure from the terrain of the Wind Rivers, much more like Southern California with the absence of surface water and shade.
The most amazing feature about the Great Divide Basin is that there is nothing amazing about it -- it is just a massive plot of uninhabited land that is so harsh that the grass has to take shade underneath the sagebrush.

The last 20 miles into Rawlins are on pavement, otherwise it's mostly dirt 2-tracks.

Sedimentary sandstones and shale outside of Rawlins.
