Southern Colorado

The continual high mileage and difficult terrain of the Great Western Loop started to catch up with me in Colorado, when my forefeet became tender and bruised, due to having worn through the protective tissue. In this photo I am applying Luekotape, which adheres wonderfully to skin, in the hope that it would give me some additional protection.

Hiking near Red Mountain and in the Sawatch Range

Leadville, a former silver mining boomtown, is the highest city in the United States at 10,200 feet.

Mt. Massive, the second highest peak in Colorado and the third tallest in the Lower 48, at 14,421.

A sliver of Mt. Elbert, the tallest peak in Colorado at 14,433. The CDT skirts the eastern flank of the mountain, and hikers wishing to immerse themselves in a stream of weekend warriors can make a side-trip up.

Glowing aspens in the Sawatch Range, taken just below Hope Pass, with the old establishment of Winfield in the valley below.

Colorado's aspens are pretty amazing in the Fall, but I still do not think they surpass the beauty of New England's forests.

The Sawatch Range features numerous peaks -- many 14-ers, but a lot of 12-ers and 13-ers too that are equally worthy of a peak bagging effort -- and enormous scree fields.

Evening sun light beams on red-toned Fall grasses just below Lake Ann Pass in the Collegiate Peaks.

From the Indian Peaks to the South San Wilderness, the hiking experience was simply euphoric: almost every day, and usually several times each day, I would be overcome with a sense of elation about life.
