New Mexico

At the Colorado-New Mexico border. The change from CO to NM is not just a political one: the CDT transitions from a world-class hiking trail into a hodgepodge of 2-tracks, gravel roads, short sections of trail, and cross-country segments almost immediately.

The trail follows the 2-track over Mogote Peak.

My feet were in tough shape by the time I exited Colorado. Wet weather in northern New Mexico did not help things.

Note the bruising in the forefoot. That's bad.

Amazing story here. This is Cory Anthony from Mississippi. He and his dad had come out to NM to go elk hunting and his brother, Drew, was apparently watching my progress online and predicted that Cory and his dad would run into me. He was right.

Rio Chama canyon at sunrise

The Rio Chama, a medium-sized river in what is otherwise a very dry region.

The canyon's sandstone cliffs got me thinking about the Grand Canyon, which finally seemed back within reach.

A tarantula, the first I'd ever seen, but certainly not the last.

A fresh mountain lion track, I think -- it seems to be too big for a bobcat.
