New Mexico

On the summit of Mt. Taylor, the last time I would be above 11,000 feet.

The view from near the summit, looking south towards the city of Grants and I-40.

Afternoon sunshine breaks through the cloud cover.

These ponderosa pines get lit up just before sunset.

Another tarantula, one of the coolest insects that I have ever seen. This guy was about baseball-size.

A rainbow graces the sky above El Malpais National Monument.

El Malpais ("The Badlands," in Spanish) is home to numerous lava flows, similar to those I encountered in Oregon near South Sisters Wilderness. There are two types of lava, aa ("ah-ah") and pahoehoe ("paw-hoey-hoey"), the latter of which is picture here.

La Ventana Natural Arch

A view of El Malpais from a sandstone escarpment on its east side. These lava flows have hindered efforts by Indians, settlers, and modern man to travel through this region.
