Northern Arizona

The Colorado and the westernmost tip of Marble Gorge.

The vegetation is bleak down near the River, both because of the extreme heat and aridity, as well as the rocky and erosion-prone nature of the soil.

The Unkar Delta, with the Unkar rapids at the mouth of Unkar Canyon (just to the left, at the river's bend).

The last sunset, and a good one at that. The red shades of the canyon just soak in the soft evening light.

My last campsite, in the Escalante Canyon wash.

My last dinner: freeze-dried lasagna and a Bud Light.
From the last day.

I had some extra time, and a desire to see what I missed hiking after dusk the night before, so I backtracked from my camp to the high spur between Cardensas the Escalante Creek. It was worth it.

Like I said, definitely worth it.

The slot canyon in 75-Mile Canyon

Things start to get rough along the Escalante Trail west of Escalante Creek -- technical terrain, unclear sharp turns, scrambling, talus fields, etc.

The upper sedimentary layers of the Grand Canyon are horizontal, whereas many of the lower layers are tilted, due to some long-ago uplifting.

The last sight before topping out on the Rim!
