Arctic Trucks

I would not describe myself as a motor-head. Not even close, surprise, surprise. But I couldn't help but be awed by the trucks I saw in Iceland. These are hard-core, retrofitted vehicles designed for serious highlands travel, the major challenges of which include big river fords, technical surfaces (sand, big rocks, poorly maintained roads, etc.), and remoteness (an issue when the truck burns though its gas tank or drops its transmission), and others.

This van was used by a highlands tour operator.

Iceland Search & Rescue

Notice the "snorkels" on these Land Rover Defenders -- those black pipes that run from the engine block to the top of the passenger door. Snorkels allow the vehicle to be submerged as deep as the air intake location without flooding the engine.

This particular F350 went on a crazy trip through the Canadian Arctic in 2003.

Even the tour buses are outfitted with special tires, 4-wheel drive, low gear ratios, and additional lift in order to take on roads in the highlands.

A traveling group of Swiss found this great campsite near the river Kreppa on F910.
