1. To have a great experience on the Pacific Crest Trail
The PCT is an incredibly beautiful, diverse, and well maintained trail. I consider myself fortunate to have the time, resources, and independence to spend some time on it. It'll be especially nice after having had several "real" jobs since September 2005.
2. To get back into shape
In the first five months of 2006 I drove 23,000 miles and gave 93 slideshows about my Sea-to-Sea hike while on the "2 Seas 2 Feet" slideshow road tour. It was a great experience and great opportunity, but it was not conducive to staying super-fit: I was usually working 60-80 hours a week, eating at restaurants at least twice a day, and sitting on my butt way too much. Then I came down with a metatarsal stress fracture in mid-April and had to be inactive for a month. A 1,500-mile trek on the PCT should whip me back into shape.
3. To scope out the trail for some hikes I'm thinking about doing in 2007 and/or 2008
I think breaking the 66-day PCT speed record without a support crew is entirely possible. And there's another awesome hike involving all/part of PCT that has not been done yet (sorry, that's all the details I'm giving).
