As cold as the Arctic in the winter, as hot as the Sarah in the summer, and always dry, the Great Divide Basin in Wyoming is one of the most inhospitable places in the Lower 48. Here, the grass takes shade under the sagebrush in order to survive, and the only inhabitants include widely dispersed cattle, wild horses, antelope, and a handful of other hardy animals. Life is sustained by infrequent precipitation -- and as this photo demonstrates, even the precipitation that does fall is not guaranteed to actually reach the ground.
